Fire Department
paramedic Ron Reed Jr. and his fiancée Jamie Monhaut apparently
wanted to make sure the department's first firefighter's ball
was a memorable one.
It wasn't enough that Reed, 29, was honored with the EMT/Medic
of the Year Award.
He and Monhaut topped the dining, dancing and awards ceremony
with a surprise wedding.
Near the end of the event, Porter County Sheriff Chief Deputy
Dave Lain "arrested" Reed, South Haven Fire Chief Doug Patton
said.
Handcuffed, Reed was led to a makeshift altar in front of Porter
Superior Court Judge Julia Jent, who was also in attendance.
Patton walked the bride down the aisle. Reed, still handcuffed,
and Monhaut, 27, of Portage were married. Lain presented the new
Mrs. Reed with the key to the handcuffs and gave her the choice
as to whether or not she should unlock the cuffs.
She unlocked the handcuffs, Reed said Monday, adding that he and
his new bride had decided to arrange the surprise wedding about
two weeks before the firefighter's ball.
"We figured our family and everybody who are close to us would
be there," Reed said, adding he and his new wife have been
together for eight years. She's a clerk for the Visiting Nurses
Association in Valparaiso.
The couple only let a few people know.
"I told my parents because they weren't coming," Reed said. His
dad, Ron Reed Sr., is a full-time paramedic at Merrillville and
part-time at South Haven. He was scheduled to work in
Merrillville Saturday night and had to get someone to cover his
shift to attend the wedding.
Before the surprise wedding, the department handed out awards to
members and citizens.
Rondy Solivais, of Portage Township, received the Citizen of the
Year Award. Early the morning of April 4, 2004 Solivais pulled
the victim of a car accident to safety before firefighters
arrived on the scene......
